When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr (Scholastic 1971) is the book that I have been reading for my Reading and Language Arts class. We were assigned to find a few books that one may recommend to students if they liked this book. My suggestions were:
Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl (Pocket Books, 1953)
The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia by Esther Hautzig (HarperTrophy, 1995)
My Secret War: The WWII Diary of Madeline Beck (Dear America) by Mary Pope Osborne. (Scholastic, 2000)
Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and My Secret War: The WWII Diary of Madeline Beck both take place during the same time period and yet are completely difference accounts and experiences of the same the event. I feel that this could be a good perspective to give to students and have them see World War II from different viewpoints and positions. The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia is a good selection because just like Anna in When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, the main character is forced to leave her home and become a refugee. This book will show a more brutal side to being a refugee and enable students to make connections between to two characters and the two books.
